Many people honor their dads every year, but very few are aware of the lady who led a 62-year effort to make the day a federal holiday. When it was first suggested, Father's Day was not well received until 1972 when it was declared a national holiday in the United States.

History of Father's Day:

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd's mother died when she was 16 years old, leaving her father to raise Dodd and her five younger brothers on her alone. Dodd saw the need for a day to honor dads, particularly her, while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

Dodd was so passionate that she created a petition for the first Father's Day, which she proposed held on her father's birthday in early June. Even though the petition only had two signatures, Dodd persuaded many local church groups to participate on the condition that the date is pushed back to late June so they could prepare. Dodd's virtually life-long quest of pushing Father's Day for national recognition began with the ensuing celebration in Spokane, Washington. Dodd would travel around the United States for the next half-century, speaking in favor of Father's Day and lobbying for the cause.

It wasn't until 1972 that Father's Day became a national holiday. Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Lyndon B. Johnson all wrote in support of the holiday over the years. Still, none of them were able to enact legislation ratifying it during their terms. In 1970, the United States Congress approved Joint Resolution 187, which encouraged Americans to "give public and private demonstrations of such day to the everlasting love and appreciation which they hold for their fathers." Two years later, President Richard Nixon signed the resolution into law.

Father's Day Gift:

Dads are most ordinary guys converted by love into heroes, explorers, storytellers, and singers of melodies," Pam Brown said of dads. Fatherhood is a difficult task that every father undertakes wholeheartedly. Papa does not say what they want but always manages to meet our needs. He is a Superhero even though he does not wear a cape. He doesn't have superpowers but can make you grin with whatever he does. He is The Hero, a unique individual in your life. On Father's Day, June 20th, it's time to honor your hero and lavish him with all the love he deserves.
